Pilates, A Controlled Workout
A short history of Pilates
Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He was a weakly child suffering from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. He studied oriental and Western philosophy as well as certain types of exercises and was particularly influenced by ancient Greek and Roman medical treatments. These elements constitute the basis of his method, which was refined through the creation of exercises, resulting in an innovative system he developed throughout his life. In 1926, Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara opened their first studio in New York. It was the dancing community which really recognized the value of the Pilates method and its profound and inherent understanding of how the human body functions.

Pilates CLASS
Practiced in small groups of two to a maximum of four participants, the Pilates philosophy is geared at attaining good health and postulates that the human being – body, mind and spirit – must be considered as a whole. The Pilates equipment is designed to shape the entire body through positions and movements simulating functional activities and thereby correcting body alignment and balance. An extensive range of exercises from basic to master level can be performed on the floor or on machines.
